10 Great Online Video Resources for IT Pros

Whether you want to up your game and add some new skills to your arsenal, or simply keep on top of developments in information technology, there are a number of great video resources online that might help.

1. TechRepublic

Whether it’s career management, tips and tricks, or overviews of what’s new in technology, TechRepublic’s video section has a little bit of everything for busy IT professionals. You’ll find interviews with top technology figures alongside practical advice and information for career IT folks. Its sister site ZDNet shares some of the same collection but has some of its own special series for technologists as well.

2. Microsoft “How Do I?” Videos

If you work with Microsoft products including SQL Server, Internet Explorer, Windows Server, Exchange, and SharePoint, you’ll want to check out the archive of “How Do I?” videos. Arranged by product, they include typically short, step-by-step instructions for accomplishing specific tasks.

Part of the larger Microsoft TechNet full of various resources for IT Pros, the “How Do I?” videos series also has its own RSS feed so you can keep up with it in your news reader as well.

3. InfoWorld Video

Information technology resource and media guide Infoworld has a well-stocked video section organized into news, information briefs, analysis, screencasts, and interviews. You can also check out the most recent clips and the featured videos section. Videos are easily shareable and embeddable as well, so it’s easy to send relevant videos to colleagues or teams.

4. O’Reilly TV

As a well-regarded specialist computer book publisher, O’Reilly Media offers a number of seminal guidebooks, manuals, reference guides, and practical application publications for system administrators, developers, open source practitioners and more. They also have a well-populated YouTube channel with a decent selection of interest to IT pros, from webcasts and speakers to overviews of current and emerging technology topics and initiatives.

Another venerable information clearinghouse for IT pros, eWeek magazine’s online home has a large video archive of interest to industry professionals. News briefs, trade show coverage, and technology overviews add to several instructional series in topics like database, enterprise applications, infrastructure, security, and storage. The featured videos are arrayed prominently at the top, although some of the back catalog can be more difficult to comb through without resorting to search.

6. Cisco YouTube Channel

Although this will be of most interest to IT pros who support Cisco products, Cisco’s YouTube channel also contains some videos of a more general interest. From case studies to speakers to showcases of emerging technologies, the frequently-updated collection also has Cisco-specific data sheets and a section for the small business.

7. Microsoft Events and Webcasts

With so much clout, Microsoft makes the list twice. They have another rich media repository worth checking out depending on your specific job roles. The Events and Webcasts center includes some of the Technet-specific content mentioned above, but breaks down the organization of resources more finely into topics of interest for IT executives and IT pros. You can browse by media type (live webcasts, in-person events, on-demand webcasts, podcasts and virtual labs), resource type, and product family — or find upcoming webcast events on the calendar.

8. CIO Video

CIO is a publication geared toward business technology leaders, with an extensive video archive tailored towards the intersection of IT and business leadership. Organized into the categories of general news, technology, how-to, leadership, and most recent, CIO videos aim to help IT executives stay knowledgeable in their fields and on top of emerging trends.

9. CNET TV

It’s not entirely geared towards IT in particular, but CNET TV’s significant video archive should contain quite a bit of interest for information technology pros looking for resources to improve their knowledge base. There are specific sections for how-to videos, product-oriented videos, buying guides, current news, live events, and serial tech shows.

Whether it’s trying to decide on new technologies to bring into the workplace or getting extensive coverage of that trade show you didn’t make it to, CNET TV might fit the bill for your next video fix.

10. Tekzilla

Though it’s primarily oriented towards more consumer-level information technology geeks of all stripes, Revision3’sTekzilla is an entertaining and accessible way to stay on top of current developments in a wider range of technology than you might run into during your day-to-day. Featuring two personable and knowledgeable hosts and frequent technology professional guests, Tekzilla also publishes daily video tips and how-tos with practical instruction on a variety of platforms
